The death of a 12-year-old middle school student in New York on October 14, 2007 is being attributed to the superbug known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Omar Rivera was a seventh grade student at Intermediate School 211 in the Canarsie section of Brooklyn. New York City health officials said they had not confirmed that the antibiotic-resistant infection was contracted at the school.

City health officials notified administrators at IS-211 about Omar Rivera’s MRSA infection on October 22 after receiving laboratory confirmation of the infection. Parents at the school were notified on Thursday, October 25.

Officials assured parents that the school had been properly disinfected and urged proper hygiene as the best method of prevention. It is not believed that any other students at the school are infected with the potentially lethal strain of staph.

Omar Rivera is the fourth American youth to die from a MRSA-related illness this month. The other deaths occurred in Virginia, New Hampshire, and Mississippi, and scores of milder infections have been reported throughout the country.
