Following the diagnosis of antibiotic-resistant staph infections in several local students and teachers, the Tulsa Public School District will now require teachers and staff to notify health services of all children with suspicious looking rashes or wounds. Confirmed cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have been diagnosed in a teacher at Edison High School, a student and teacher at Skelly Elementary School, and a student at Jones Elementary School. Two additional cases of the superbug have been reported at Lindbergh Elementary School, according to KJRH.

Tulsa Public School officials sent letters home to parents to inform them of the presence of MRSA in the school district. The schools are being sanitized to help combat the virulent bacterial infection. There has been no word on whether teachers and employees will be trained on how to detect possible MRSA infections.

Drug-resistant staph infections have been reported recently by two other school districts in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area. Last week Union Public School officials announced that a Union Intermediate School student had contracted a mild case of MRSA and another case has been confirmed in an Owasso school. Neither case is thought to be life threatening.
