A Richmond, Missouri school is closed for disinfection after the diagnosis of drug-resistant staph in at least seven children. The children, all students at Sunrise Elementary School, are infected with the virulent form of staph known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. An eighth student and a teacher are believed to have the infection as well, although no confirmation is available at this time.

The MRSA outbreak at Sunrise Elementary began early last week. Shortly after parents were notified of five confirmed cases of the infection, additional cases of MRSA surfaced. Parents and school officials are particularly concerned since at least four of the infections have been linked to a single classroom, KMBC-TV reported.

All of the infected students are undergoing treatment, and are expected to recover. Sunrise Elementary School will be closed for cleaning and disinfection on Monday, November 5, and Tuesday, November 6, 2007.
