MRSA is the virulent staph bacterium that made headlines in October when it caused the deaths of children in <a href="http://www.staphnews.com/staph-infections-by-location/new-york/new-york-student-omar-rivera-12-is-fourth-american-child-this-month-to-die-from-lethal-superbug-mrsa/" title="Omar Rivera of Brooklyn, New York">New York</a>, <a href="http://www.staphnews.com/staph-infections-by-location/mississippi/shae-kiernan-11-of-mississippi-succumbs-to-mrsa-in-under-3-days/" title="Shae Kiernan of Mississippi">Mississippi</a>, <a href="http://www.staphnews.com/staph-infections-by-location/new-hampshire/staph-triggers-lethal-pneumonia-in-new-hampshire-preschooler-catherine-bentley/" title="Catherine Bentley of New Hampshire">New Hampshire</a>, and <a href="http://www.staphnews.com/staph-infections-by-location/virginia/methicillin-resistant-staph-infection-claims-life-of-ashton-bonds-17/" title="Ashton Bonds of Virginia">Virginia</a>.</p>
<p>The Columbia County Schools Superintendent has no plans to close any schools at this time. Facilities are being disinfected, and hand and surface sanitizer is being delivered to all schools in the county.</p>
<p>The affected Columbia County schools are:</p>

<li>Lakeside High School</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Middle Schools</strong></p>

<p><strong>Elementary Schools</strong></p>
<ul>

<p>NBC Augusta reported that a twelfth student at one of the aforementioned schools is infected with MRSA, but no further information is available at this time. The <a href="http://www.ccboe.net/" title="Columbia County Board of Education">Columbia County Board of Education site</a> is still reporting 11 confirmed cases.</p>
<p>The infected students are receiving medical treatment, and on the advice of a medical consultant, have been asked by Columbia County school officials to remain home until their lesions have finished draining.</p>
